ICE is a system which allows the astronomer to acquire CCD
data using IRAF on a SUN workstation. ICE (which stands for "IRAF
Control Environment") replaces the FORTH data acquisition systems that
have been in use with PDP 11 computers since the earliest days of CCDs
on
Kitt Peak (circa 1980). The astronomer uses ICE to initiate an exposure
using
basically a single command, observe. At the end of the integration,
the data are
written to disk in IRAF format, where they can be taped in FITS format.
Furthermore, the astronomer has immediate and full access to the many
powerful diagnostic tools contained within IRAF, as well as routines
for quick-look and data reduction
