First Light for SkyMapper

First light is the occasion when a telescope is first trained upon the sky and collects star light. The SkyMapper Telescope achieved first light at 20:35MST 11th July 07 in the Electro Optic Systems Tucson factory.

During July the SkyMapper Telescope will be optimised for performance and then disassembled, packed into containers and shipped to site in Coonabarabran, N.S.W., Australia.

The telescope has now (Sept. 2008) been placed in it enclosure and the facility is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2009.
